Here are photo-reports of Sarcelles in France (from 2004 to 2006) shot by the photographer Xavier Zimbardo. It was on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the construction of this first French "dormitory city". It was inaugurated in the 1950s near an old village. When Xavier Zimbardo is not travelling, he lives in this city, and he is loyal to his home town. Every year, he organizes with researchers and photographers from all over the world, an international festival of socially concerned photography, which now stands out as one of the best annual photography events in France.
This city distant from city centers for migrant workers and the native proletariat had symbolized a lack of identity and a hopeless future of the young workers who had to return home everyday after work in boredom and sadness. There were several suicides here.
This same city today, has a thousand cultures where the children of such workers have created a social life, with each community having invented a singular life from their roots and being proud to share it with others to make room for life "together" - a place of life.
A detail ... this is the place where Dominique Strauss-Kahn before leaving to go to the IMF was mandated several times as mayor and MP, you can remark him on a photo, on the left among elected officials who wear the tricolor sash. An excellent MP for the city and its region, people say. It was 2004.

Il s’agit de différents reportages faits à Sarcelles, en France, entre 2004 et 2006 par le photographe Xavier Zimbardo, à l’occasion du cinquantenaire de la construction du « grand ensemble » qui à proximité d’un ancien village avait inauguré le modèle français des villes dortoir, dans les années 1950. Entre deux voyages, Xavier Zimbardo habite dans cette ville, lui restant fidèle ; il y organise chaque année, avec des chercheurs et des photographes du monde entier, un festival international de la photographie sociale, qui maintenant s’impose comme un des meilleurs événements annuels de la photographie en France.
Non pas un de ses grands reportage dans le monde mais la sienne ville en France, qui dans les années 60 avait symbolisé les cités à l’identique éloignées des centres-ville, pour accumuler les travailleurs émigrés et la nouvelle génération des prolétaires natifs. Celle où les jeunes ouvriers de retour chez eux après le travail mourraient d’ennui et de tristesse. Au point qu’elle inspira une chanson populaire engagée contre son nom, d’un chanteur prolétarien qui s’appelait Jean Ferrat et la rendit célèbre dans l’hexagone.
C’est celle-là même aujourd’hui, aux mille cultures dont la descendance a fini par organiser la vie sociale, inventant du grand ensemble la vie « ensemble » pour faire place à la vie — place de vie.
Un détail... Sarcelles est l’endroit où Dominique Strauss-Kahn avant de partir au FMI avait été mandaté comme maire et plusieurs fois comme député, d’ailleurs on le remarque sur une photo, à gauche des élus qui arborent l’écharpe tricolore. Un excellent député pour la ville et sa région, dit-on. C’était en 2004. (A. G. C.)
